The formation of the Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria was preceded by the formation of Sickle Cell Clubs around the country and of the Federation of Sickle Cell Clubs of Nigeria in 1991. The Sickle Cell Club is a non-governmental, non - profit making patient/parent support and advocacy organization that is basically unsuited to addressing some other important issues in sickle cell disorder (SCD) control, such as, research, capacity development, policy implementation, monitoring and evaluation in a sustained manner.
In order to focus on these important issues, the Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria was established in November 1994, as a non-governmental and non-profit making organisation dedicated to the proper care and control of sickle cell disorder in Nigeria.
